An antique French pewter porringer serving dish, bowl or wine tasting cup. A porringer was a small, shallow bowl with a handle, used from the medieval period through the 18th century for eating foods like porridge, soup, or stew. They were typically made from materials like pewter, silver, or wood. As an alternative use, the Science Museum have an example they describe as a Pewter bleeding bowl, 18th or 19th century.
The piece we have for sale here is stamped ‘ETAIN DECORATIVE’ on base. The French word ‘étain’ means tin (the metal). It can refer to the pure element or to pewter, which is an alloy primarily made of tin. In this example, the porringer is made from pewter.

This exquisite vase features warm brown and vibrant orange tones that beautifully showcase the characteristic style of mid-century design. BAY KERAMIK was founded in 1934 by Eduard Bay in the charming town of Ransbach-Baumbach, which is located in the picturesque region known as the Kannenbäckerland in western Germany. This area, often referred to as the "potters' land," is a historic centre of the ceramics industry and home to the largest clay deposit in Europe. Initially, the company's output focused primarily on utilitarian wares until the early 1950s, when a greater emphasis on decorative items began to emerge. An authentic Victorian / Edwardian table lamp, constructed using two real animal hooves, most likely deer, arranged symmetrically around a central white metal stem. Hoof lamps of this type were produced in limited numbers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and were intended for use in gentlemen’s studies, hunting lodges and country houses. While three-hoof examples are more commonly encountered, two-hoof lamps are notably scarcer, making this a desirable and slightly unusual survivor.
The lamp is mounted on a decorative turned solid wood base and fitted with a decorative pressed white metal collar, displaying foliate detailing typical of the Art Nouveau period. The piece has been converted to electricity at some point in its life, which is entirely typical and expected for lamps of this age. It has been fitted in the past with a Bakelite in-line switch.
This is a genuine period object, not a later reproduction and remains a bold and characterful decorative piece over a century after it was made.

This cast brass front door knocker prominently features Providence House, located in Chester, England. The name of the house is reputed to have originated from its distinction as the only residence that escaped the devastating outbreak of plague in 1647–48, which tragically claimed the lives of approximately 2,000 individuals in the city. However, it is important to note that this particular house was not constructed until after the plague had subsided, leading many historians to believe that the name likely refers to the previous occupants of the former structure on the site who were spared from contracting the disease. For those interested in literature, the building is also mentioned in the novel "God's Providence House: A Story of 1791" (1865) authored by Isabella Banks, further enriching its historical significance.
