A vintage artisan made hand painted hardwood Indian elephant bearing a howdah seat. A howdah is a wooden seat or covered platform that was placed on the back of an elephant for seating. Howdahs were used to transport wealthy people to ceremonies, processions, hunting, and warfare. They were often decorated with textiles like satin and velvet, and sometimes with expensive gemstones. The Kandyan Art Association was formed in 1882 to revitalise traditional Kandyan arts and crafts (such as metal working, weaving, wood carving, painting, jewelry making, music and dance) and support the traditional craftsmen by providing them with a sales outlet.
