Antique Japanese bronze hibachi planter

For sale, a large antique Japanese polished bronze jardiniere, planter or hibachi heating vessel, featuring decorative landscape panels. The hibachi, or fire bowl, is a traditional Japanese heating device. It is a brazier which is either round, cylindrical, or box-shaped, open-topped container made from or lined with a heat proof material and designed to hold burning charcoal. Hibachi were used for heating, not for cooking. It heats by radiation and is too weak to warm a whole room. Sometimes, people placed a tetsubin or iron kettle over the hibachi to boil water for tea. Later, by the 1900s, some cooking was also done over the hibachi.

Authentic original antique or vintage used condition. The decorative landscape panels have been polished over time. Usual patination to the bronze, wear and signs of use typical of an antique or vintage item of this age. The riveted handles are decorative and there has been an old repair carried out to the interior.
