Hand carved wooden fruit bowl or parat

£60.00

Includes free shipping to UK mainland

For sale, an antique, hand-carved Indo Persian wooden fruit bowl, also known as a parat.

This stunning piece is made from highly tactile polished hardwood, showcasing both beauty and craftsmanship. It would make an impressive statement as a centerpiece on any dining table. While it is ideal for use as a fruit bowl, its historical significance is equally remarkable. Parats were originally employed in the preparation of the dough used to make an array of delicious traditional Indian breads, including chapatis, rotis, naans, and parathas. To create this dough, one would add flour, water, and a pinch of salt, knead until it forms a smooth ball, and allow it to rest. This simple yet vital process forms the foundation of the traditional Indian menu, adding richness to its cultural heritage.

  • Height: 6 cm

  • Diameter: 36 cm

Circa early 20th century.
