For sale, a vintage French pewter porringer serving dish, bowl or wine tasting cup. A porringer was a small, shallow bowl with a handle, used from the medieval period through the 18th century for eating foods like porridge, soup, or stew. They were typically made from materials like pewter, silver, or wood. As an alternative use, the Science Museum have an example they describe as a Pewter bleeding bowl, 18th or 19th century. The piece we have for sale here is stamped ‘ETAIN DECORATIVE’ on base. The French word ‘étain’ means tin (the metal). It can refer to the pure element or to pewter, which is an alloy primarily made of tin. In this example, the porringer is made from pewter.
